A disused road tunnel near Waterloo station was transformed into a giant exhibition space by the anonymous graffiti artist "Banksy"over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend.
Murals in the Bristol artist's famous stencil style appeared with work by numerous other artists as well as the public in a quarter-mile stretch of the tunnel in Leake Street, Waterloo.
Images of Madonna kissing Britney Spears and a hoodie with a knife appeared alongside installations of crashed cars.
People could add their own stencil work to the tunnel walls in a three-day exhibition, which opened on Saturday ...and closed Monday evening.
Reclusive artist Banksy kept the tunnel's location secret until Friday morning.
He said that the exhibition, known as the Cans Festival, aimed to "transform a dark forgotten filth pit" into "an oasis of beautiful art"."I've always felt anyone with a paint can should have as much say in how our cities look as architects and ad men," Banksy said.
The installations will be removed after the event but Banksy said he hoped the murals and graffiti would become a permanent part of the tunnel.
The free exhibition also included images of Tower Bridge, the Queen and Boris Johnson in a darkly humoured and controversial style. One installation depicted a burnt-out car crashed into a tree "sprouting" CCTV cameras, whilst another stencil spelled out: "Hey Banksy - why don't you return my emails?"
I"If you have a statue in the city centre, you could go past it every day on your way to school or work and never even notice it, right. But as soon as someone puts a traffic cone on its head, you've made your own sculpture!"—Banksy
