Spent 4 nights in Krakow, Poland last week with travelling pal Malc and another wonderful European city destination. It won't be long before unspoilt Krakow is overwhelmed by tourists and stag parties and becomes another Prague. It is very cheap with beer costing no more than 50p-90p for a half-litre and soup and a main meal costing less than £4 so it was no surprise that I had money left over. Nightlife and bars were great - I can't remember how many dark candle-lit underground pubs we went in but their unwritten rule is that they remain open until "the last man is still standing". The weather definitely helped with lots of sun and temperature resembling late summer rather than Autumn!!
A visit to the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkineau was a powerful, poignant, deeply moving experience and essential to understand fully what happened to the fate of so many Jews in the second world war. I hope these selection of photos illustrate the massiveness of what occurred
Kazimierz - The Jewish Quarter (Ghetto) just south of Krakow centre is where many of the Jews were sent before being rounded up to be transported to the concentration camps nearby. Nowadays the area is being regenerated and has traditional pubs with a definite quirkiness about them - It is a breath of fresh air away from the "tourist" dominated old town. We stumbled upon the best beer in Krakow at a pub owned by a microbrewery which sold Dragons Head Amber and Dark Ale!!
